5 Lessons Learned from the UW Entrepreneurship Program
In the University of Washington’s Foster School of Business Entrepreneurship Program, students engage in curriculum that doesn’t solely focus on conventional equations and theories, but around what it takes to turn their ideas into reality. Throughout my journey in this program, I had the opportunity to explore its immersive curriculum, dive into the spirited challenges of the Environmental Innovation Competition, and participate in the Jones and Foster Accelerator. Now, as I reflect on my experiences, I'm eager to share the five lessons that not only enriched my academic pursuit, but have developed to become the cornerstone of the entrepreneurial mindset that guides my everyday work and approach to challenges today.
1. Know Your Company Vision
When a young company is able to clearly define their purpose, long-term aspirations, and its core values that drive their team, this sets them up for a solid foundation to grow. Questions like, “Why does your product or service exist?” or “When your company becomes successful, what will the world look like?” are important to reflect upon when developing your vision statement. In my experience at UW, stakeholders would constantly ask these questions to ensure that my team and I were guiding our product to its targeted market intentionally and had a sense of purpose behind each decision we made.
Takeaway: Your vision is the foundation on which you build your company, a long-term goal that keeps you focused on the bigger picture, and a key to effectively communicating your value to customers.
2. Be Scrappy
I learned that when someone says to be “scrappy” in the world of entrepreneurship, they’re referring to the mindset of utilizing resourcefulness, creativity, and an adamant willingness to do what it takes to achieve your company goals. Startups often face resource constraints, uncertainty, and formidable challenges. Being scrappy with limited resources is what brings innovative and cost-effective solutions to fruition.
Takeaway: Scrappy entrepreneurs don’t wait for the perfect conditions; they make the most of what’s at hand, embrace the hustle, and use this mindset to empower themselves to forge their own path to success.
3. Your Go-to-Market Strategy Should Be Flexible
When first taking your product to market, having a solid plan of how you will do it is critical. However, a flexible go-to-market (GTM) strategy will help you stay relevant and competitive when your landscape shifts or a future pivot is needed. Emerging companies are constantly navigating uncharted territory of understanding their product-market fit, and the initial assumptions about their target market may evolve.
Takeaway: Whether it’s feedback from existing customers or the addition of having your product enter another market, there may come a time where your GTM strategy will need to be iterated to stay in the pursuit of sustainable growth.
4. Work With an Adaptable Team
In the world of entrepreneurship, navigating the unknown is inherent. An adaptable team can help you pivot when needed, swiftly responding to changes in the competitive landscape or the implementation of customer feedback. They excel at creative problem-solving, innovation, and efficient resource allocation, ensuring that your company continues to accelerate.

5. Feedback is Your Friend
Whether it is positive or constructive, listening to feedback from your customers, mentors, and team members allows you to refine your offering, address pain points, and better understand your customer base. It fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation, enabling you to pivot when necessary and adjust your strategy to better fit the market you are serving. Embracing feedback refines your product and builds trust and loyalty with your customer base, showing them that you value their opinions.
